5-Pack of AGC / 3AG
Fast Blow Fuses
An AGC (3AG) fast-blow fuse consists of a thin wire or
ribbon filament inside a glass cartridge terminated by metal end caps.
The filament is designed to have a very specific melting point.
Its alloy, thickness and shape depend on the
fuse's current rating and its manufacturer.
The purpose of a fuse is to prevent an electrical circuit from drawing too much
current. When the current through a fuse exceeds its rating, measured in amps
(A), the fuse's filament melts, interrupting all current flow. The fuse is
then said to be burned out,
blown, or electrically open.
A fuse also has a
voltage
rating, measured in volts (V). A fuse's voltage rating must be greater than or equal to the
voltage of the circuit it's used in. For example, a 125 V fuse is fine in
a 32 V circuit but not in a 250 V circuit.
The voltage rating only becomes important when the fuse begins to
blow. The fuse must open quickly, extinguish any arcing,
and prevent the circuit voltage from re-striking across the open
filament.

5-Pack of MDL
Slow Blow Fuses
MDL fuses are time-delay versions of the AGC / 3AG
fuses. They're the same size and fit in the same fuse holders
but are designed
to briefly conduct a
current that exceeds the fuse's amp rating.
For example, slow-blow fuses are useful in the power supplies of vacuum-tube
amplifiers. The fuse's delayed action lets the supply's
capacitors soak up all the
charge
they need to reach high operating
voltages without blowing the fuse.
Various constructs are used to temporarily delay the opening of a "slo-blo"
fuse. Three common constructs are shown in the photo to the left.
The construct may vary with the fuse's amp rating and
manufacturer.
